Em and The Big Hoom by Jerry Pinto

Blurb (from the GoodReads):

'A beautiful book, a child's-eye view of madness, full of love, pain, and, unaccountably, much wild comedy' Salman Rushdie

In a tiny flat in Bombay Imelda Mendes - Em to her children - holds her family in thrall with her flamboyance, her manic affection and her cruel candour. Her husband - to whom she was once 'Buttercup' - and her two children must bear her 'microweathers', her swings from laugh-out-loud joy to dark malevolence.

Brilliantly comic and almost unbearably moving, Jerry Pinto's portrait of a woman finding it difficult to stay sane - and what happens to those who cannot help but love her - is one of the most powerful and original fiction debuts of recent years.

My take on the book:
When I picked up this book last year, there couldn't have been better read at the time. It went pretty well with my mood then. Just completed reading Mockingjay - the final book in The Hunger Games series - I wanted to read something serious, more meaningful and interesting in all sort of different ways.

Basically, the story was what I considered dark literature. It is set in a depressing backdrop. There isn't anything positive or happy about the story, you know before started reading it. But still you are also aware that it is not going to disappoint you.

After reading it, I know it is more of a positive shade in the negative rather than an entirely negative or depressing story.

The narrative was so true and powerful, there isn't moment you would feel depressed or something. Of course, the situation of the protagonist is sympathetic, but then you would rather prefer indulging in the narrative than to worry about other silly stuff.

Very powerful book. Any person even a tiny-weenie bit of interest into serious literature must read this book.
